"I conclude that optimism is robustly associated with cardiovascular health, and pessimism with cardiovascular risk. I conclude that positive mood is associated with protection from colds and flu, and negative mood is with greater risk for colds and flu. I conclude that highly optimistic people may have a lower risk for developing cancer. I conclude that healthy people who have good psychological well-being are at less risk for death from all causes... I am all for realism when there is a knowable reality out there that is not influenced by your expectations. When your expectations influence reality, realism sucks." What I wrote in my book. If your expectations have anything to do with reality, then it is optimism or pessimism, NOT realism." - Martin Seligman

"Sociologists distinguish among a job, a career, and a calling. You do a job, a career, and a calling. You do a job for the money, and when the money stops, you stop working. You pursue a career, for the promotions, and when the promotions stop, topped out, you quit or becomea time-serving husk. A calling, in contrast, is done for it's own sake. You would do it anyways, with no pay and no promotions. "Try to stop me!" is what your heart cries when you are thwarted." - Martin Seligman

"Companies with better than a 2.9:1 ratio for positive to negative statements are flourishing. Below that ratio, companies are not doing well economically. We call this the 'Losada ratio,' named after the brazlian Marcel Lasada, who discovered this fact. But don't do overboard with positivity. Life is a ship with sails and rudder. Above 13:1, without a negative rudder, the positive sails flap aimlessly, and you lose your credibility. John Gottman computed the same statistic by listening to couples' conversations for entire weekends. A 2.9:1 menas you are headed for divorce. You need a 5:1 ratio to predict a strong and loving marriage - five positive statements for every critical statement you make of your spouse. A haabit of 1:3 in a couple is an unmitigated catastrophe." - Martin Seligman

"It is likely that depression, anxiety, and anger come from heritable personality traits that can only be ameliorated, not wholly eliminated... So one thing that clinical psychology needs to develop in light of the heritable stubbornness of human pathologies is a psychology of "dealing with it." We need to tell our patients, "Look, the truth is that many days - no matter how successful we are in therapy - you will wake up feeling blue and thinking life is hopeless. Your job is not only to fight these feelings but also to live heroically: functioning well even when you are very sad." - Martin Seligman

"What-went-well exercise. Every night for the next week, set aside ten minutes before you go to sleep. Write down three things that went well today and why they went well. Next to each positive event, answer the question "Why did this happen?" Writing about why the positive events in your life happened may seem awkward at first, but please stick with it for one week. The odds are that you will be less depressed, happier, and addicted to this exercise six months from now." - Martin Seligman

"Creating your happiness: Positive Psychology exercises that work. The gratitude visit: Step 1. Close your eyes (if you're driving keep your eyes on the road). Call up the face of someone still alive who years ago did something or said something that changed your life for the better. Someone who you never properly thanked; someone you could meet face-to-face next week. Got a face? Step 2: Your task is to write a letter of gratitude to this individual and deliver it in person. The letter should be concrete and about three hundred words: be specific about what she did for you and how it affected your life. Let her know what you are doing now, and mention how you often remember what she did. Make it sing! Step 3: Once you have written the testimonial, call the person and tell her you'd like to visit her, but be vague about the purpose of the meeting; this exercise is much more fun when it is a surprise. When you meet her, take your time reading your letter. Notice her reactions as well as yours. If she interrupts you as you read, say that you really want her to listen until you are done. After you have read the letter (every word), discuss the content and your feelings for each other. You will be happier and less depressed one month from now." - Martin Seligman

"A fact that is not so widely known is that ninety-five percent of all winning is accomplished by only 5 percent of the participants. What makes that five percent different?... It is my observation, after competing against and teaching the world’s best, the primary thing that separates the winners from the others is the way they think. Winners are convinced they will finish first. The others hope to finish first."

"Set up a new self-image that is in direct conflict with your old habits and attitudes. Donny’s new attitude is, “I am the best free throw shooter on my team.” His new habit is each time he makes a free-throw he must say, “That’s like me!” Each time he misses he must forget his error. Olympic athletes call this technique Feast or Forget. He must run a mental program on each free throw to maximize his chance of making every shot. He should reinforce his successes by recording in his Performance Analysis Journal."
